چکیده

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on juvenile pink and chum salmon during their initial period of residency in nearshore marine habitats of western Prince William Sound. In oiled locations, both pink and chum salmon fry in the nearshore marine environment were contaminated by hydrocarbons in 1989, but not in 1990. Field observations and laboratory experiments indicated that ingestion of whole oil or oil-contaminated prey was an important route of contamination. In 1989, juvenile pink salmon grew significantly slower and were significantly smaller in oiled locations than non-oiled locations, although neither their feeding nor availability of their prey was reduced in oiled locations. In 1990, size and growth of juvenile pink salmon were similar in oiled and non-oiled locations. We concluded that oil contamination from the Exxon Valdez reduced the growth of juvenile pink salmon in western Prince William in 1989. Because survival of pink salmon is directly related to growth during their early marine residency, survival and productivity of affected salmon populations were probably also reduced.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Restoration Project Annual Report Pristane Monitoring in Mussels and Predators of Juvenile Pink Salmon and Herring Restoration

Pristane concentrations in mussels were monitored at 30+ stations during spring and summer to compare nearshore feeding conditions for juvenile pink salmon and herring. The dominant-biomass zooplankter of PWS (Neocalanus plumchrus) contains about 1 % pristane, a refractory hydrocarbon. Fecal material produced consequent to predation on Neocalanus contains un-absorbed pristane that may be accumu...

Can reduced predation offset negative effects of sea louse parasites on chum salmon?

The impact of parasites on hosts is invariably negative when considered in isolation, but may be complex and unexpected in nature. For example, if parasites make hosts less desirable to predators then gains from reduced predation may offset direct costs of being parasitized. We explore these ideas in the context of sea louse infestations on salmon. In Pacific Canada, sea lice can spread from fa...

Parasitism and food web dynamics of juvenile Pacific salmon

There is an increasing realization of the diverse mechanisms by which parasites and pathogens influence the dynamics of host populations and communities. In multi-host systems, parasites may mediate food web dynamics with unexpected outcomes for host populations. Models have been used to explore the potential consequences of interactions between hosts, parasites and predators, but connections b...

Fish farms, parasites, and predators: implications for salmon population dynamics.

For some salmon populations, the individual and population effects of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) transmission from sea cage salmon farms is probably mediated by predation, which is a primary natural source of mortality of juvenile salmon. We examined how sea lice infestation affects predation risk and mortality of juvenile pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon, and dev...

Evaluating signals of oil spill impacts, climate, and species interactions in Pacific herring and Pacific salmon populations in Prince William Sound and Copper River, Alaska

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in March 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and was one of the worst environmental disasters on record in the United States. Despite long-term data collection over the nearly three decades since the spill, tremendous uncertainty remains as to how significantly the spill affected fishery resources. Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) and some wild Pacific sal...
